Practicing the Critical Analysis Process

Today in class we practiced the critical analysis process together using prints of art from the Cape Dorset Printmaking Collective. Laying one piece on each individual table, we went around the room to look at different pieces of artwork and comment on one of the five processes listed below.

  1. Initial Reaction
  2. Description (story?)
  3. Analysis
  4. Consideration of Cultural Context (ALL art has a cultural context)
  5. Informed Opinion
Our table began with this piece.
These are the notes our group and other groups commented about this particular piece.

Our instructor also used this activity as an opportunity to open up a discussion about murdered and missing Indigenous women here in Canada. One of the pieces we were looking at was actually printed by Annie Pootoogook, a Cape Dorset artist who was recently found dead in the Rideau river. A quick search of her name brings up troubling news articles about the racist response one RCMP officer had when speaking publicly about her death.
